Dermoneuromodulating (DNM) Course

Manual Treatment for Peripheral Nerves and especially Cutaneous Nerves

About DNM

This course integrates current pain neuroscience with peripheral nerve manual therapy to affect persistent pain syndromes. DNM employs an interactive approach to manual therapy, using peripheral and cutaneous nerves as an entry point to affect a patient’s nervous system and effectively change pain, improve movement and reduce fear and anxiety related to persistent pain.

DNM is positioned to be an integral part of modern manual therapy, combined with pain education and therapeutic exercises in providing the best possible care for our patients.

About Diane Jacobs

Diane Jacobs is a physiotherapist with over 40 years of experience. Her interest in applying manual therapy for nerves was developed by studying different manual therapy approaches as well as studying David Butler’s work on the nervous system in the 1990s. After years of research and understanding the nervous system more deeply, including conducting dissections to study peripheral and cutaneous nerves, she developed a treatment approach to both peripheral and cutaneous nerves which has effectively reduced persistent pain in her patients.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand pain neuroscience and the effect of manual therapy of peripheral nerves on pain.

  2. Understand the DNM approach in affecting pain through the nervous system.

  3. Develop better palpation skills to assess peripheral nerves and their surrounding tissues.

  4. Develop better manual therapy skills as well as therapeutic alliance skills in reducing threat and calming the nervous system.

  5. Develop a deeper appreciation of the role of manual therapy in the context of the biopsychosocial approach to treating pain.
